2008 Champion Offers Thanks, Looks Ahead to 2009

Following his record 63 point finish, including two individual event wins, 2008 Champion Bart Sistrunk offered the following comments for fans and fellow competitors alike.

"Firstly, thank you to Kelly for taking care of our two future champions, Jack and Emma, before and during the competition, as well as supporting me in doing ridiculous things like buying bowling shoes to use the one time per year I bowl. I couldn't have done it without you."

"What started in 1999 as an excuse for the guys to drink beer and play games for two days straight has turned into so much more; bringing the whole family together to celebrate Christmas together as just that, a gigantic, happy family. I think watching the Jr. Quad this year was as much fun for me as participating in the Sr. Quad."

"I'd also like to again recognize our first Hall of Fame member, Papa. As I said before, he is the only one of us who has participated in every Quad and always done well at the task at hand.

"Finally, for those of you who said I was no longer a threat, I encourage you to locate your name on the 2008 Order of Finish posted below. If you can't find it, just start at the top with my name, and work your way down."

"Little" John Shilstone Reinstated in Circle of Fear

Following weeks of bravado and false pretense, Little John Shilstone has officially withdrawn from the 2008 Quadrathlon, citing work related causes.

"The worst part to me is the lameness of his excuse", said father "Big" John after hearing the news. "I mean look at my son-in-law Tim. His excuses not only involve national security, they frequently involve direct orders from the President of the United States. Very convincing." Siblings Mark and Anne were unavailable for comment.

2008 Competitor Self Assessments

Name: Bart Sistrunk
2007 Finish: 4th (Darts Champion)
2008 Champion's Poll: 2nd

"Firstly I'd like to thank my fellow competitors. You all really did your best this year....oh, wait....this is my acceptance speech. Well, you'll all get to hear this one soon enough....."

Name: Doug Sistrunk
2007 Finish: 1st (Disc Golf Champion)
2008 Champion's Poll: 1st

First off Good luck to all competitors especially those who have been involved since the beginning of the quad and have yet to receive a jacket. I would like to say my weaker events have become stronger and my strong events have remained constant. So for all of you out there planning on another Star or a new black jacket better luck next year because I'm gonna go ahead and repeat last years win. Anyway I'm sure the rest of you would improperly display the quad trophy which is why I should continue to keep it displayed and safe for at least one more year if not more.

Name: Des Carroll
2007 Finish: 3rd
2008 Champion's Poll: 6th

Competitor Carroll was unavailable for comment. Fortunately, the following anonymously written letter was found (edited for content on this family friendly site)

"Now, I want you to remember that no ba$tard ever won a Quad by not drinking. He won it by making the other poor dumb ba$tard not drink. Men, all this stuff you’ve heard about Des not wanting to fight, wanting to stay out of the Quad, is a lot of horse dung. Americans traditionally love to fight. All real Americans love the sting of battle, and Des is no different. When you were kids, you all admired the champion pool player the best darts thrower, the big league Frisbee golfer, the toughest bowler. Americans love a winner and will not tolerate a loser. Americans play to win all the time. Des wouldn’t give a hoot in h3ll for a man who lost and laughed. Because the very thought of losing is hateful to Des.
Des has the finest food and equipment, the best spirits and is the best man in the world. You know, by God I actually pity you poor ba$tards Des is going up against. By God, I do. He is not just going to beat you ba$tards, he’s going to cut out your living guts and use them to grease his bowling ball. He’s going to murder all you lousy Sistrunks, Shilstones, Coopers, Weigands, Hales, Hipps, and especially those Burke ba$tards by the bushel.
Now, some of you boys, I know, are wondering whether or not you'll chicken out facing Des. Don't worry about it. I can assure you that you will. The Family is the enemy. Des will wade into them. Spill their dreams. Shoot their hopes in the belly. When you put your hand into a bunch of goo that a moment before was your best friend's face, you'll know what to do…Run away from Des
Now there’s another thing I want you to remember. You will not get any messages saying that Des is holding his position. He is not holding anything. Let the Family do that. Des is advancing constantly and is not interested in holding onto anything except the enemy. Des is going to hold onto you by the nose and he’s going to kick you in the a$$. Des going to kick the h3ll out of you all the time and he’s gonna go through the competition like crap through a goose.
There’s one thing that rest of you will at least be able to say when you get back home. And you may thank God for it. Thirty years from now when you’re sitting around your fireside with your grandson on your knee and he asks you what did you do the year Des got pi$$ed and won the Quad, you won’t have to say, "Well, I shoveled $hit in Louisiana with the Higginbothams."
That’s all."

Name: Dave Weigand
2007 Finish: 8th
2008 Champion's Poll: 9th - T

"As always, I will play the spoiler ! Keeping that one person from tasting sweet victory ! In 2006 it was Bart in darts and 2007 it was Des in Pool ! Who will be next ?"

Name: Travis Weigand (Photo not provided)
2007 FInish: 9th
2008 Champion's Poll: 7th - T

While I think its useless to assess how I'll perform in this years Quad I will make the following predictions about the bowling leg of the competition. The first place finisher will win by a margin of 40 pins or greater.Second and third place will be decided by 20 pins or less. Fourth place on down will be all over the board as usual. One person will throw four or more consecutive strikes in a game. Two competitors will convert a moderately difficult split. And of course at least one person who expects to bowl well will completely self implode.I've got one word for the rest of the field: spares. Flag a couple single pin spares here, chop a few multi pin spares there, and instead of sitting in fourth place you're now dragging behind in seventh. Don't dig yourself a hole you can't climb out of.

Competitor: Sean Hipps
2007 Finish:
2008 Champions Poll: 9th - T

I just wanted it to be known that I'm bring my "A" game. I'm thinking about winning 3 out of 4 events. Two events will be won by most competitors dropping out from fear. Either way I'm older and ready to bring my game in Pool, Bowling, Frisbee Golf, and TRASH TALKING! It's Going DOWN!!!!!

Competitor: Johnny Hipps
2007 Finish: 2nd
2008 Champion's Poll: 3rd

No injuries to report coming into this years Quad competition. Probably in the best shape I've been in the last cuple years. Hope you guys are ready because second this year is not an option in my mind.I feel like John Sr.'s foot injury is better and hope he can complete at close to full strength. He's the man to beat. Doug = overconfident. Des= Lackadaisical. Bart= Two kids. Fred= one and done. The rest are spoilers! Bring your best. I know I will!!!!

Competitor: Zach Burke
2007 Finish: 14th (Last)
2008 Champion's Poll: 7th -T

Last years quad for me was devastating...my scores didn't count. I had to leave for a wrestling tournament, but that is not the case this year my friends, No sir. I am here to kick a$$ and take names this year! Just get ready!

Competitor: Brian Bilbo
2007 Finish: 13th
2008 Champion's Poll: 9th - T

To Sean's assessment I would like everyone to know that I am planning on bringing my A+ game, and i will be a dominant competitor. Yes, I have been practicing my frisbee, pool, darts, bowling skills, and trash talking skills, the rumors are true. As good as Uncle Freddy may think he is, and as skilled and uninjured Uncle Johnny may be believe himself to be, I believe the game is starting to curve to the younger guys, and I plan on being the first to prove it.

Competitor: Mark Shilstone
2007 Finish: 7th
2008 Champion's Poll: 17th

I was talking to my therapist, and he and my organic nutritionist as well as my yoga instructor, and pet psychic. All agree: the quad is bad for my aura, luckily I have spent several thousand dollars on purifying crystals, and more rounds of therapy, so I can still participate. I was also talking to my good friend Eric Estrada, and he said “Mark, this reminds me of something I learned while doing CHiPS”. The rest wasn’t important, but I wanted you guys to know that I have powerful friends. Frankly, I have a very important life, oiling down wrestlers, and making sure that the fights are not fixed at WWE Smack down, so with all I have to worry about there is no way I will win the Quad this year or ever. I think we all know who the true champion is, Mr. Des Carroll…. Snap into a Slim Jim ooooh yea!!!

Competitor: Fred Sistrunk
2007 Finish: 6th (Pool Champion)
2008 Champion's Poll: 5th

I can't really say how I will finish this year until the final determination has been made on whether or not Tom Womack will be allowed to compete again, and if he ends up in my pool and darts brackets. If he's in, my chances are looking pretty good indeed. Without Tom, Bart will almost certainly be the winner.

Competitor: Tim Hale
2007 Finish: Circle of Fear
2008 Champion's Poll: 18th

I would like to take this opportunity to make a confession, and here it goes. Last year I was so frightened at the prospect of facing the Carroll/Sistrunk brothers that I begged the Air Force to send me to Guam for Christmas. I am sorry you had to find out this way Anne. I have tried so many times to tell you the truth. I will be there this year if I can get the panic attacks under control, all I ask is that you guys take it easy on me. I am the only Air Force competitor, and I am truly terrified of all you rough Army men. In conclusion my prediction is this: Des Carroll wins pool, Frisbee, and darts. I just wish they would give him the jacket and save us all the pain.

Competitor: "Little" John Shilstone
2007 FInish: Circle of Fear
2008 Champion's Poll: 9th-T

This event marks my momentous first Quad. I'm really not sure how I'll do, but based on where Mark normally finishes (my closest genetic match in the competition), it looks like if I really give my all I should easily be able to finish in the top 17. From what my dad tells me, Bart is going to walk away with the win.

Competitor: Kevin Cooper
2007 Finish: 10th
2008 Champion's Poll: 9th - T

I think this year will be a repeat of 2001, a time I have dubbed, “the glory days”. I think you all remember from the field of 7 competitors I was 3rd in pool, 4th in darts, 6th in bowling, and 5th in frisbee, points in every event, yea! There is no way Brian and Zach are going to beat me. Sean might, I just wish that I had gone to a college that could actually get a football team out on the field. Oh well, not everyone can go to Ole miss, my prediction… Des Carroll by a mile.

Competitor: Todd St. John
2007 Finish: NA
2008 Champion's Poll: 9th - T

As the youngest of five boys, the very fact that I survived childhood stands as proof of my mental and physical toughness. As any great financial mind will tell you, however, history is the best indicator of future performance. I think that we should ask ourselves, "who among this year's competitors has won five quads, and been the individual champion in every event but bowling (which I think we all agree is a dumb event)?" If someone as outstanding as that were to compete, how could he not win, whoever he may be? PS - visit my band's website at http://www.the80steam.com/ . We play in Nashville all the time.

Competitor: Davis Burke
2007 Finish: Circle of Fear
2008 Champions Poll: 9th - T

After my embarrassing stint in COF 2007 I am going to make an appearance at the 2008 Quad. I stress the word “appearance”, not “performance”. We all know I have never shown up to compete, and this year will be no different. I am still recovering from the train wreck that was Georgia football this year, and I would like to make this announcement: I am now a Rebel fan. I know this comes a shock to many of you, but I have made the switch and there is no talking me out of it. That being said the Burke family will be Blacked Out at this year’s Quad, I think this is my only chance at a win, although it will probably not help because we all know that Des is the guy to watch this year.
